Project Identity is a federally funded program designed to stimulate interest in college attendance and the awareness of college entrance requirements for African-American and other minority males attending middle school. The Project aims to help to develop and sustain the capacity of middle schools to prepare these young boys for high school and post-secondary education. By providing a network of support, particularly for the adults who influence middle school students, specifically, their counselors and families, Project Identity strives to channel and direct more minority males to higher education. Project Identity will give special attention to boys from backgrounds and communities that historically have not encouraged large numbers to pursue, enroll and succeed in post-secondary education.

OUR VISION

The vision of Project Identity is to expose middle school male students to the best academic resources and cultural activities so that learning becomes a source of inspiration to not only pursue the college option but to do so with enthusiasm and vigor. By assisting both parents and school counselors, Project Identity will create a learning environment for participants that extends beyond the classroom.

We are looking for a select few of next years seniors to come in March to be photographed with our new backgrounds! Positive Images Spokes Models get FREE portrait sessions, the opportunity to earn commissions for Senior Portrait referrals, & meet other 2010 Positive Images Spokes Models from all over the Bay Area. Photographs of Spokes models are incorporated in our Faceboook Videos and other 2010 Senior Portrait promotions! Spokes Models also participate in our Senior Portrait Focus groups to help generate ideas for future campaigns.
We want self motivated students who love our work and want to show it to classmates & friends.

'09 Positive Images Spokes Model has Flair for Design

When 09 Spokes Model, Andrew Wilson, asked me to photograph some of his jewelry designs, I was more than happy to help. I just was not prepared for the incredible pieces he began to pull out of his velvet bags.
This young man has incredible vision and design flair. He works with natural stones, silver, & macrame to create stunning bracelets, necklaces & belts.

When I asked him about his jewelry designing background, he shared this with me:

"I started designing jewelry my freshman year in high school while attending Southwestern Academy in Beaver Creek, AZ. It turned more into a hobby for a couple of years, but then I discovered silver. I leaned how to wrap wire and create chain and paired this with macrame and string work to find my own style."

His Positive Images Family wishes him well as he prepares his portfolio for design school applications...We expect big things to come from our Positive Images '09 Spokes Model, Andrew Wilson.

Senior Portraits!

African American Education Summit at Cal State East Bay in Hayward

African American Ed. Summit at Hayward

Information and a great many resources will be on hand for participants of the African American Education Summit.
The African American Education Summit, bringing together a wide range of community resources and expertise to empower African American youth and their families, will be held on Saturday, Feb. 21 from 8:45 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on the Hayward campus of California State University, East Bay, 25800 Carlos Bee Blvd. Check-in and registration begin at 8 a.m.

Admission to the summit is free and the public is invited. The summit, which will begin in the University Gymnasium, is co-sponsored by Cal State East Bay and the Alameda County Office of Education. Reservations are requested and can be made online at www.csueastbay.edu/AAEducationSummit.

"It is designed to engage and motivate African American youth and their families to pursue and live the dream of obtaining a college education by providing information and resources in a festive, family-friendly environment," said Greg Smith, CSUEB's associate vice president for planning and enrollment management, who chairs the event.

Those encouraged to attend include parents and families, high school and junior high school students, school administrators, teachers, counselors and business and community leaders. On-the-Spot-Admission to Cal State East Bay will be available for eligible high school seniors who have already submitted an application through the CSU Mentor Web site (www.csumentor.com) and provided transcripts by Feb. 9.

The summit will feature distinguished speakers, information sessions and an educational resource fair. Alameda County Supervisor Keith Carson will deliver the keynote address.

Topics to be covered in the workshops and panels include student life experiences on campus; college admissions; and financing a college education through grants, scholarships and financial aid.

The African American Education Summit will be the second community education conference held on the Cal State East Bay campus within a month. The university hosted the Latino Education Summit on Jan. 24.

"We're encouraging entire families to participate and learn about college admissions, financial aid, scholarships, and of course, our campuses and programs in particular," said Cal State East Bay President Mo Qayoumi. "As a state university, we realize that we have a responsibility-and an opportunity-to help meet the needs of our region, ranging from employment and work force preparation to education, economic opportunity and multicultural inclusion."

A light continental breakfast will be provided, and parking on the Cal State East Bay campus will be free.
